It’s not uncommon for Houston women to have labia that are asymmetrical. When this happens, it can greatly detract from a woman’s self-confidence. She may feel self-conscious about her body, which can make sexual experiences less fulfilling.

Luckily, there is a way to correct labial asymmetry through a procedure known as labiaplasty. Labiaplasty is a surgery where Dr. Yarish and Dr. Bartlett can cut away excess tissue and reshape the labia so they are the same size. A labiaplasty can also reduce the size of the labia if they are too large. Learn more about what labia should look like, common problems with the labia, and how a labiaplasty can correct all these issues.

What Should Labia Look Like?

Keep in mind that every woman’s body is different, so there is no ideal labia shape. That being said, some women do prefer labia that look neat and tidy, which is why a labiaplasty is so handy. A few studies have taken a look at labia in many women and determined some average measurements which may act as a guide for women considering a labiaplasty.

  • The labia majora is usually 5 inches long.
  • The right labia minora is usually 4 inches long and 3 inches wide.
  • The left labia minora is usually 4 inches long and 2.5 inches wide.

As you can see, asymmetrical labia is a widespread problem, so it’s not shocking that many Houston women may want to correct it.

What Are Common Problems With the Labia?

There are many ways in which the labia can look asymmetrical or unbalanced. Some of these include:

  • Asymmetrical labia minora, which is when one lip is larger, thicker, or longer.
  • Long labia minora, which is when the inner lips hang down past the outer lips.
  • Long labia majora, which is when the outer lips hang down in folds of loose skin.
  • Curving labia majora, which is when the outer lips curve to expose the labia minora.

The good news is that a labiaplasty can correct all of these issues and more.

What Happens During Labiaplasty?

If you decide to get a labiaplasty, you’ll be in good hands with two of the best plastic surgeons in the Houston area — Dr. Yarish and Dr. Bartlett. They’ll begin the procedure by using anesthesia to make sure you don’t feel anything during the procedure. Next, they’ll start by either trimming or cutting away excess tissue from the labia. In some cases, the skin can then be sewn back together, but in others, they may cut away a pie-shaped piece to change how the labia hangs.

Once the trimming is complete, they will then sew up the incision with sutures so healing can begin.
