Dermal fillers are a popular first line of defense against the signs of facial aging for Houston men and women. The treatments, which can be performed over your lunch break, are quick and deliver results promptly.
While there’s virtually no downtime for Houston patients who receive dermal fillers, these injectables can cause swelling at the treatment sites. The length of time a patient has swelling varies greatly. Some patients only have swelling for a few hours after their treatment, some have swelling for a few days, and others have delayed swelling that shows up a few days after their injections.
There are some tried and true ways of reducing swelling after receiving dermal filler injectables. Here’s a list of 5 tips to reduce swelling in your face and get back to your regular social schedule.
1. Refrain From Using Certain Supplements and Medications
Certain medications and herbal supplements, if taken in the 2 weeks before you receive your injectables, are known to increase the risk for swelling. These include medications like ibuprofen, aspirin, Motrin, and naproxen, as well as supplements including Vitamin E, fish oil, CoQ10, and flaxseed oil.
If you take any of these medications or supplements on a daily basis for medical reasons prescribed to you by your primary care physician or a specialist, make sure to let our injector know. Together with Dr. Yarish, we will weigh out the benefits versus the risks of abstaining from these medications and supplements temporarily and may need to collaborate with your prescribing doctor to determine the best treatment plan for you.
2. Abstain From Alcohol Before and After Your Dermal Filler Injectables
About 3 days before your injectables appointment, you should refrain from drinking alcohol of any kind, including beer, wine and liquor. You’ll also need to abstain from these substances immediately after your treatment to reduce both swelling and the potential for bruising.
3. Take the Arnica or Bromelain Supplement
While we’ve already discussed that some supplements need to be stopped before your treatment, arnica and bromelain supplements are actually recommended for Houston injectable patients to reduce swelling and the potential for bruising. Arnica should be taken 3 days before and 3 days after your appointment. Bromelain may be taken before treatment.
4. Use a Cold Compress on Your Treatment Area
This home remedy should come as no surprise to you. Just like mom and grandma always used to say, a cold compress can reduce swelling. If you have swelling after your appointment that lasts more than a few hours, use a cool compress on the area to ice it. Just make sure to wrap the compress in a washcloth, so you don’t put the ice-cold surface directly on your face.
5. Rest and Elevate Your Head Whenever Possible
A final way that Houston patients can reduce swelling after receiving dermal fillers, especially if it lasts a few days, is some good R&R while elevating the head. While most patients find they don’t need any downtime, some do have extended swelling in which a little bedrest with their heads propped up with pillows works wonders.
