Can Breasts Sag Again After Having a Lift?

A breast lift can do wonders for reversing signs of aging in the breasts and giving you lifted, perkier breasts. Still, many women considering getting a breast lift wonder how long breast lift results last and if their breasts will ever sag again after the lift. This blog discusses how long breast lift results last, how to maintain results, what a breast lift achieves, and the benefits of combining breast augmentation with a breast lift.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breasts sag for many reasons, including weight fluctuations, body changes due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and the natural aging process that affects skin elasticity. Sagging breasts can make you feel older than you really are and droop into a less appealing shape. They may even make your breasts look smaller or larger than their actual size. Mastopexy, more commonly known as the breast lift, can improve sagging breasts and give you firmer, elevated breasts.

How Long Do Breast Lift Results Last?

Women considering getting a breast lift want to know how long their results will last. The breast lift is a procedure that provides long-lasting results that can be maintained for many years. However, it is still possible for breasts to sag after a breast lift. Skin naturally loses elasticity over time, and your breasts may begin to sag again as you age. Yet, it’s reassuring to know that your breasts won’t completely go back to how they looked before your surgery, and your breast lift will continue to make your breasts look better than they did pre-surgery.

What Can I Do to Maintain My Breast Lift Results?

To ensure that your breast lift results last as long as possible, it’s essential to maintain a stable weight. Gaining or losing a significant amount of weight can change your breast volume, which may cause your breasts to sag again.

We also highly recommend that patients do not plan any pregnancies after they get their breast lift. During pregnancy, the body undergoes dramatic changes, especially the breasts. If you get pregnant after your breast lift, your breasts may change and very likely undo the results of your lift. In these cases, women may decide to get an additional breast lift after their pregnancy. However, if you’d like to avoid having the procedure twice, waiting until you are done having kids is a good idea.

Supporting your breasts with a bra will help maintain the longevity of your breast lift. Gravity will always impact your breasts, whether heavy or light. Supportive bras should be worn during the day to maintain your results and limit the forces of gravity. Occasional periods of being braless are absolutely reasonable; however, it is not realistic to assume you will never need to wear a bra after your breast lift surgery.

What Can a Breast Lift Achieve?

Breast lift surgery has many benefits, including:

  • Corrects breast ptosis
  • Repositions downward-facing nipples
  • Improves breast symmetry
  • Reshapes the breasts
  • Reduces skin irritation under the breasts
  • Gives your breasts a perkier, more youthful appearance

Combining Breast Augmentation With a Breast Lift

Many women choose to combine their breast lift with a breast augmentation. Other women have already had breast augmentation and get a lift as a secondary procedure. Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift can be the best of both worlds: making the breasts fuller and elevating them higher on the chest. This is an excellent option for women who are dissatisfied with their natural breast size as well as the position the breasts rest on their chest.

For women who want to increase their breast size without using implants, fat grafting may be a more desirable option. Fat grafting uses your own body fat in places you can spare it as donor sites and transfers that fat to the breasts to add volume, especially in the upper pole. You can expect a conservative increase in volume of a half to a full cup size. However, larger volumes can only be achieved with an implant.
