About Botox

Botox (BOTOX®) is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that can reduce visible signs of aging from around the face. This treatment is a neuromodulator derived from the protein botulinum toxin A. This means that this treatment inhibits the transmission of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for the repeated facial contractions and expressions that lead to the development of visible aging. (1) By reducing this activity, you can not only soften existing lines, but also reduce the likelihood of deeper wrinkles from forming in the future.

About Daxxify

Daxxify (DAXXIFY®) is another FDA-approved neuromodulator injection that derives from botulinum toxin. It works similarly to Botox, but it has a few key differences. Daxxify has a special formulation containing a stabilizing peptide, which helps it last longer than other injections (usually around 9 months!). It also offers a faster onset, with some patients noticing effects as early as the next day.

About Dysport

Dysport (DYSPORT®) is a third FDA-approved, botulinum-toxin-derived injectable that smooths wrinkles. Dysport is best for addressing glabellar lines, the frown lines between the eyes, but it can also effectively address crow’s feet and forehead lines.

Preparation

After scheduling your injections, you will need to begin making certain preparations. To guide you, your specialist will give you a set of comprehensive preparation instructions. These instructions will be fairly straightforward, but you will still need to follow each one. They may include:

  • Modifying your skincare routine to avoid harsh or irritating products.
  • Avoiding tanning products, as well as direct or excessive sun exposure.
  • Wearing sun protection when leaving the house, even when it is cloudy.
  • Discontinuing any nicotine use or alcohol consumption several days before and after your appointment.
  • Keeping your skin hydrated by wearing moisturizer and drinking plenty of water.
  • Arriving at your appointment with clean skin that is free from any makeup, skin care products, or facial jewelry.

Procedure

Your injector will administer your injections in our office. The duration of your appointment will vary, with each appointment ranging between 10 and 15 minutes. Most patients find that they do not need anesthesia when receiving their injections, but you may discuss your numbing options if you are more sensitive to pain.

Your injection specialist will begin by cleansing and sanitizing your skin before using a skin-safe marker to mark where they will place each injection. They will determine each placement based on where your active, contracting facial muscles are. From there, your injector will measure out the appropriate dosage and carefully administer it intramuscularly. Once they finish performing your corrections, you will be free to return to your routine.

Recovery

You will be free to return to most of your daily activities after receiving your injections, as there is little to no downtime associated with Botox, Dysport, or Daxxify. However, there are certain guidelines and restrictions you will need to follow as your skin heals. You will need to avoid touching, scratching, or placing any other pressure on the treated areas. You will also need to avoid any physically demanding or strenuous tasks for at least 24 to 48 hours.

During this time, you may experience some side effects, such as mild swelling, tenderness, and redness from the injections. These effects are temporary and will subside on their own within several days, but you may manage them with a cold compress or over-the-counter pain medications if necessary.

Your specialist will provide any additional instructions you may need for your recovery. By following them, you can ensure the best possible outcomes from your injections.

Results

You will be able to start seeing the initial results of your injections after three to five days, but it can take up to two weeks for the full results to develop. However, some patients may see their results appear as soon as the next day. Once they do, you will be able to enjoy smoother skin and a more youthful-looking appearance. These rejuvenating solutions will cause your skin to smooth itself out, reducing the appearance of any visible signs of facial aging. Because this treatment relaxes your muscles, it will also reduce new signs of aging from developing.

You can enjoy the results of your injections for up to four months before we recommend returning for maintenance injections. Patients receiving Daxxify typically see longer-lasting results. With regular treatments, you will find that your results last longer over time. (2)
