Tummy Tuck

Consultations offered at our two convenient locations in Houston and Lake Jackson, TX

A tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure that can address sagging skin, stubborn fat deposits, and lax abdominal muscles to help you restore the natural curves and contours of your figure. (1)

Over time, events such as pregnancy and weight loss can wear on the figure. Your skin can stretch and lose its elasticity, diet-resistant fat can develop, or your abdominal muscles can weaken and separate, leaving you feeling disconnected from your own body. While some people can address certain concerns through dieting or regular exercise, many others find that their efforts remain fruitless, leaving them to seek alternative solutions. By undergoing a tummy tuck, you can effectively address each of these concerns and achieve an appearance that truly demonstrates the work you have put into yourself.

About Tummy Tucks

A tummy tuck, or an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that can eliminate sagging skin, address accumulated fat, and tighten separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) to help you achieve a flatter and smoother stomach. This procedure is one of the most widely performed procedures in the country and continues to see increasing demand each year due to its transformative results. (2)

Different Types of Tummy Tucks

Our surgical team is proficient at performing several different types of tummy tucks to suit a range of needs. During your consultation, your surgeon will determine which approach will best serve you.

Traditional (Full) Tummy Tuck

If you have found yourself frustrated by loose skin and muscle weakness both above and below your navel, we recommend undergoing a traditional tummy tuck.

Your surgeon will first make an incision that extends from hip to hip, just above the pubic area. Through this incision, they will proceed to tighten the abdominal muscles extending from the rib cage to the pubic bone. They will then excise your redundant skin and fat before repositioning your navel to a more central and proportionate location.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is ideal if you have developed loose skin exclusively below your navel. (3)

In this variation, your surgeon will place a shorter incision just above the pubic area, similar to that of a C-section incision. They will then tighten any separated muscles in the lower abdomen, as well as remove excess skin. However, we will leave the navel untouched.

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck is a procedure that can address a significant amount of loose skin that wraps around the sides of the hips.

Your surgeon can perform this procedure by placing an incision just above the pubic bone. This incision will extend further laterally toward the hips. From there, they will tighten your abdominal muscles and excise loose skin around the abdomen, flanks, and waistline, allowing them to achieve a more defined hourglass shape. They will then reposition your navel to ensure it appears balanced with your new figure.

Fleur-De-Lis Tummy Tuck

A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck is a specialized variation of the traditional tummy tuck that can address redundant skin that hangs both vertically and horizontally. (4) You may be suitable for this procedure if you have recently undergone massive weight loss.

Your surgeon can perform this procedure by placing a horizontal incision above the pubic bone, similar to that of an extended tummy tuck. They will then place a second incision that extends vertically down from the ribs toward the pubic area. From there, your surgeon will proceed to remove your excess skin, address any accumulated fat, tighten any weakened abdominal muscles, and reposition your navel.

Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck if you have found yourself frustrated by certain concerns found around the abdomen, including:

  • Sagging skin
  • Fat accumulations
  • Weakened or separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)

These concerns can additionally lead to other physical issues, such as:

  • Skin irritation caused by rubbing or chafing skin folds
  • Hygiene concerns
  • Poor core strength

If you are interested in undergoing a tummy tuck, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding achievable outcomes. You must possess a stable weight that you can maintain postoperatively. You should also lead a nicotine-free lifestyle or be willing to quit. Our surgical team will assess your candidacy during your consultation.

Personal Consultation

During your personal consultation, either Dr. Yarish or Dr. Parikh will meet with you individually to confirm your candidacy and help you establish your treatment plan. They will review your medical history, then discuss your concerns, motivations, and goals. They will also perform a physical evaluation to examine your natural anatomy, including where your fat has accumulated and the quality and condition of your skin.

Dr. Yarish or Dr. Parikh will then use this information to start creating your treatment plan. They will determine the most effective type of tummy tuck to perform and what surgical techniques they should employ. Depending on your goals and physique, they may recommend integrating other procedures into your treatment plan, such as liposuction. Throughout this meeting, they will explain each aspect of your procedure to ensure you feel confident about your tummy tuck and understand what to expect.

Preparation

Once you decide to proceed with your procedure, our surgical team will help you prepare. We believe that true transformation requires more than just time in the operating room, which is why we provide each patient with a set of detailed instructions to help them prepare their body for healing. These instructions generally consist of:

  • Discontinuing the use of blood-thinning medications or supplements
  • Arranging to take time away from your professional and personal responsibilities and commitments
  • Preparing reliable transportation home from your procedure
  • Filling any prescriptions you will need for your recovery
  • Ceasing any nicotine or alcohol consumption in the weeks before the appointment
  • Following the nutritional and vitamin intake guide you receive

Procedure

Our surgical team performs each tummy tuck on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia. The exact duration of your procedure will vary depending on the type of tummy tuck you receive and the complexity of the procedure overall, but you can expect it to last between two and four hours.

Recovery

When you are recovering from a tummy tuck, you can expect swelling, bruising, and general discomfort. These effects are temporary and will subside as you continue to heal, but you may also manage them with prescribed medications and plenty of rest. As soon as you feel well enough, we recommend taking light walks to promote circulation, but you will also need to walk slightly hunched to protect your repaired muscles.

After approximately 5 to 7 days, we will ask you to return to the office for a follow-up appointment. Here, your surgeon will remove any drains or sutures and ensure you are healing correctly. From then on, you will need to return for weekly visits with our medical aestheticians. We give lymphatic massages and ultrasound treatments to each of our patients to help reduce fluid buildup and break down scar tissue—both of which will accelerate your recovery. You will be able to return to your career within 10 to 14 days, but you will need to avoid physical activities or heavy lifting for another 6 weeks, or until your surgeon directs you otherwise.

Results

You will be able to experience the full results of your tummy tuck once you have fully recovered. Your exact results will vary, but you can expect to enjoy smoother and tighter skin, a more defined waist, accentuated contours, improved proportionality, as well as an hourglass-shaped figure.

The results of a tummy tuck are long-lasting and durable. To best preserve them, you will need to maintain a stable weight.

FAQ

Will my tummy tuck leave visible scarring?

While a tummy tuck does require a linear incision, we place it just above the pubic bone to ensure you can conceal it beneath most underwear and bikini bottoms. We additionally direct each patient on how to manage their post-operative scars to help them fade and flatten until becoming faint and barely perceptible.

Can I still have children after undergoing a tummy tuck?

Yes, it is safe to have children after receiving a tummy tuck. However, we recommend completing your family before undergoing this procedure. Future pregnancies can stretch your abdominal muscles and skin, reversing the results of your tummy tuck.

Can a tummy tuck help me lose weight?

No. All patients should already possess a stable and maintainable weight to undergo this procedure. Tummy tucks are recontouring procedures to refine and address the concerns that traditional weight loss cannot.

How will I know which variation of tummy tuck is right for me?

During your consultation, either Dr. Yarish or Dr. Parikh will meet with you individually to review your medical history, discuss your goals, learn about your concerns, and perform a physical examination. After they confirm your candidacy, they will then discuss the best approach for each of your needs.

How long will the results of my tummy tuck last?

The results of a tummy tuck are long-lasting, and its effects can last for many years. However, it is important that you maintain a stable weight, as fluctuations can alter your appearance long-term.
